Why the United States did not veto the proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza

Not once or twice, the United States voted in three resolutions in the UN Security Council to immediately end Israeli attacks on the war-torn Palestinian territory of Gaza. As a permanent member, the US vetoed those proposals for a cease-fire in Gaza.

But the scenario changed on Monday. A resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza was again tabled in the Security Council. To everyone's surprise, the United States refrained from vetoing the proposal.

As a result, this is the first time that the UN Security Council has passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The Joe Biden administration's no-veto policy is unprecedented. According to analysts, it has drawn attention to Washington's growing frustration with Israel's leadership over Gaza.

Palestinian rights advocates, however, say the US administration's fundamental support for Israel needs to be rethought beyond symbolic or rhetorical efforts.

Political analyst Adam Shapiro said, "This is a change." However, this did not stop the supply of US weapons to Israel. It is still very important.'

However, Washington says it is "not binding" to legally comply with the proposal. Despite this, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted sharply. He canceled a previously scheduled visit to Washington by a high-level Israeli delegation.

Netanyahu's office announced the cancellation of the delegation's visit in a statement. Allegedly, Washington obstructed Israel's war effort. Through this, the growing distance between the Joe Biden administration and the Netanyahu government has been revealed.
